Ukraine could develop a rudimentary nuclear bomb within months if Trump withdraws US assistance according to a paper prepared for the Ukrainian government. The paper finds that the country could quickly build a bomb similar to “fat man” using spent fuel rods taken from their nuclear reactors. Ukraine used to have the third largest nuclear arsenal in the world but they gave all of their weapons to Russia in exchange for a pledge that Russia would never invade and if they did, the US and UK would come to their aid. However they still retain the majority of the infrastructure and in 2024, if you have the infrastructure.. You’re pretty much already there. The paper goes on to argue that Kyiv could legally withdraw from the NPT because Russia is in violation of the Budapest memorandum. And for what it’s worth, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says they are committed to the NPT in light of the news. Last month Zelensky told Trump and the rest of the world that Ukraine would need nuclear weapons if they are prevented from joining NATO. This comes as Donald Trump Jr taunted Zelensky online saying “You’re 38 days from losing your allowance”. Some have speculated that Ukraine isn’t going to develop a nuclear weapon but rather push for “fantastic peace guarantees”. But a Ukrainian soldier told The Times ““I was surprised by the reverence the United States has for Russia’s nuclear threat. It may have cost us the war. They treat nuclear weapons as some kind of God. So perhaps it is also time for us to pray to this God.”
