Imagine this scene: you and your family are enjoying an incredible vacation in the great outdoors. You’re finishing up a hike when suddenly you see ominous clouds rolling over the horizon. What do you do? Well, there’s no need to panic because Campsite Classes by Sun Outdoors is here to show you how to keep your RV safe during stormy weather.
1. Set Up Weather Alerts
Knowing about inclement weather is the first step in getting ahead of it. Make sure to activate weather alerts from the National Weather Service on your phone. This sends weather warnings straight to your device based on your location and can be the difference between properly preparing and getting caught in a storm.
2. Retract and Secure Your Awning
An awning that is not retracted can lead to pooled water that can damage your RV. Even worse, during high winds an extended awning can act as a sail, jostling your RV and maybe even tipping it over. Leave the sailing for the water and retract your awning as a standard safety precaution.
3. Secure Your Patio
Similarly, high winds can blow patio furniture around, potentially damaging your RV, or someone else’s, during an intense storm. If your neighbor’s furniture hasn’t been secured, make sure give them a friendly reminder as well, or offer to help them “batten down the hatches.”
4. Charge Devices
There’s nothing worse than a dead phone. Let alone a dead phone when you really need it. If the power goes out for a few days, you’ll be glad your devices have a charge. Consider purchasing a portable charger for emergencies as well.
5. Check Propane Levels
In the event of a snowstorm, you’ll need to keep warm. Having a full tank is essential since heating an entire RV can drain a propane tank relatively quickly.
